KATHMANDU, NEPAL
Police today arrested an unmarried couple for murdering their newborn baby boy in their rented room in Jorpati.
The arrested have been identified as Sane Majhi and Kalpana Rai of
Jhapa. They were living together but were in no rush to marry, said DSP
Shyam Gyawali. The couple in their 20s killed the newborn baby
yesterday, hours after he was born.
Doctors at Attarkhel-based NMC Hospital suspected foul play when the
couple went there for a medical check-up. The doctors, after finding
out that the girl was a new mother but did not have baby with her, had
informed police, leading to discovery of the dead infant wrapped in a
plastic bag.
Majhi and Rai have been charged with murder. They have been remanded to seven-day judicial custody.
Majhi was a labourer at a garment factory in Jorpati and cohabiting
with Rai for the past two years. During interrogation, they told the
police that they decided to kill the baby for the fear of social stigma
as they were not married.
